Houston Hospice Volunteer Appreciation Event 2021

Houston Hospice has a robust volunteer program. Volunteers help set the tone for the compassionate care our hospice patients and their families receive.

Houston Hospice volunteers may choose to work directly with patients and families in assisted living communities in private homes, or in our Texas Medical Center Inpatient Unit. Support activities include, but are not limited to:

  • Making Phone Calls
  • Music or Pet Therapy
  • Sitting with Patients
  • Translating

Volunteers who provide direct patient and family assistance are required to complete volunteer orientation and training.

Volunteers may choose to serve in non-patient assistance efforts. These services include, but are not limited to:

  • Administrative Support
  • Butterfly Luncheon
  • Communications
  • Community Events
  • Front Desk Receptionist
  • Spirit Award Dinner
How are our volunteers trained?

Patient care volunteers are required to attend orientation and training that provides a minimum of 10 hours of engaging instruction from senior volunteers. These sessions are offered twice a year, primarily at our Texas Medical Center location. Training classes are also held in the El Campo, Texas area.

How are our volunteers trained?

Completion of training is required of all persons interested in becoming hospice volunteers, Patient Care and Non-Patient Care Volunteers. These training series are held twice a year at either our Texas Medical Center location or in the El Campo, Texas area.

Houston Hospice’s training prepares volunteers for the challenges of working with terminally ill patients and their families. Topics include:

  • Listening Skills
  • Grief and Loss
  • HIPAA Compliancy
  • Medical Aspects of End-of-Life
  • Psychosocial and Spiritual Aspects of Care

Hospice volunteers are required to provide a calm, caring presence during challenging situations and we believe our training helps develop these skills.
