Volunteers
Houston Hospice has many volunteer opportunities to serve hospice patients and families with caring and compassion. There are also ways to serve out in the in community and in our office. We love our volunteers and appreciate them as integral team members of our 42-year-old nonprofit organization. Find out more information and how to apply, below.
Houston Hospice has a robust volunteer program. Volunteers help set the tone for the compassionate care our hospice patients and their families receive.
TYPES OF VOLUNTEERS
PATIENT CARE VOLUNTEERS
Houston Hospice volunteers may choose to work directly with patients and families in assisted living communities in private homes, or in our Texas Medical Center Inpatient Unit. Support activities include, but are not limited to:
- Making Phone Calls
- Music or Pet Therapy
- Sitting with Patients
- Translating
Volunteers who provide direct patient and family assistance are required to complete volunteer orientation and training.
NON-PATIENT CARE VOLUNTEERS
Volunteers may choose to serve in non-patient assistance efforts. These services include, but are not limited to:
- Administrative Support
- Butterfly Luncheon
- Communications
- Community Events
- Front Desk Receptionist
- Spirit Award Dinner
How are our volunteers trained?
Patient care volunteers are required to attend orientation and training that provides a minimum of 10 hours of engaging instruction from senior volunteers. These sessions are offered twice a year, primarily at our Texas Medical Center location. Training classes are also held in the El Campo, Texas area.

TRAINING
How are our volunteers trained?
Completion of training is required of all persons interested in becoming hospice volunteers, Patient Care and Non-Patient Care Volunteers. These training series are held twice a year at either our Texas Medical Center location or in the El Campo, Texas area.
Houston Hospice’s training prepares volunteers for the challenges of working with terminally ill patients and their families. Topics include:
- Listening Skills
- Grief and Loss
- HIPAA Compliancy
- Medical Aspects of End-of-Life
- Psychosocial and Spiritual Aspects of Care
Hospice volunteers are required to provide a calm, caring presence during challenging situations and we believe our training helps develop these skills.

VOLUNTEER SELECTION
Submitting an application and completing our training does NOT guarantee acceptance into our hospice volunteer program. The selection process includes, but is not solely dependent on, successful completion of all variables found in Volunteer Screening for Participation.
We will notify all volunteer applicants of their acceptance status.
