General Information
Volunteers are invaluable to the Houston Hospice program.
They provide both practical assistance and compassionate
care to our patients and family members. Volunteers may lend their time and
talents in two different capacities.
First of all, volunteers may serve in direct patient and family assistance.
These services include, but are not limited to the following: Sitting with
patients, translating, making phone calls, and running errands. Volunteers interested in direct patient and
family assistance must complete a thirty hour volunteer training course.
Secondly, volunteers may choose to serve in our indirect
non-patient assistance efforts. These services include, but are not limited
to the following: Assisting as office help, participating in fundraising events, and
representing the Hospice at health fairs. It is NOT necessary for
indirect non-patient volunteers to attend the 30 hour training, only a two
hour course when offered.
Training - Thirty hour Volunteer Training classes are held several times each
year, primarily at Houston Hospice - Texas Medical Center, 1905 Holcombe
Blvd.,
Houston, TX 77030-4123. Classes are held in the El Campo area as well. The
thirty hour training is mandatory for all volunteers who will be working
with patients and families in the Patient Care Center, patients' homes or
nursing homes. Attendance at all sessions is required. Exceptions are
considered on an individual basis. For volunteers who will be helping in
the office and other non-patient related activities, short orientations will
be scheduled.
