History

In November 2002, two of Houston's pioneers in hospice care, Hospice at the Texas Medical Center and Houston Hospice, combined to form a single entity. Both organizations were founded in the 1980's and have been serving the needs of terminally ill patients and their families in Houston and surrounding communities for more than two decades.

Our mission is to provide uncompromising, compassionate end-of-life care to patients and families in our community. Through our interdisciplinary team of professionals and volunteers, we provide care that enhances the final stages of a patient's life by controlling pain and managing symptoms, providing counseling and support, and preparing the patient and family to face the last stages of life with comfort and confidence.

• Houston Hospice provides end-of-life care to patients in their home or residence, and provides support, including bereavement support, to family members.
  
  
• Hospice at the Texas Medical Center provides inpatient and respite care at its outstanding twenty-five-bed facility on Holcombe Boulevard.
  
  
• The Houston Center for Palliative Care is our innovative response to patient's, hospital's, and health insurance company's desire to have available a high quality program of symptom and pain management for individuals not yet ready for hospice. We intend to be a leader in this area. A division of this organization will be the Palliative Care Institute, which provides education on end-of-life issues to health care professionals, to human service professionals, and to individuals.

We are fortunate to have James R. Monahan as our President and CEO. He is well known in hospice circles, and has served as president of the Texas New Mexico Hospice Organization .
